About this item
- Shortwave & Longwave Ultraviolet UV have many uses beside the collecting of fluorescent minerals. Some include: find scorpions, security features on passports and currencies, A/C leak detection, ring worm detection, tin glass detection, urine stain detection, stamp collecting tagging features, and many many uses!
- A unique optical filter lets UV light pass through while blocking visible light from bulbs, ensuring only pure UV light comes through. This feature is crucial for examining fluorescent rocks and identifying fluorescent markings on mail stamps, among other applications.
- Lamp holder requires 3 D batteries (not included) typical battery life with quality batteries is 4 to 5 hours of use. Fluorescent bulbs are rated for 4000 hours of continuous use but lifespan of bulb will vary with on/off switching cycles of bulb. 100% UV blocking safety glasses are included to help protect eyes from UV and stray rock chips. Shortwave UV can cause sunburn of the eyes caused from shortwave UV radiation after prolonged use.
- Specialized Canadian UV tuned metal reflector installed which allows for more Ultraviolet output to come out from lamp. Special coatings produce maxium UV output increasing UV output by as much as 15 percent.
- Bonus small bag of sample fluroescent minerals. Baggie size is approx. 2" x 3" and contains varies sized specimens that respond to longwave and or shortwave. Some are also phosphorescent which will still glow after the UV lamp is turned off. Samples types vary but may include calcites, willemites, scapolites, sodalites, quartz, gypsum, among others.
- Rockhounding for fluorescent minerals are best done under dark nightime conditions. Fluorescent response from over 30 feet can be detected by the lamp. Fluorescent response will vary with several factors including dark conditions, distance from fluorescent mineral, and type of fluorescent mineral. Each specimen will vary in brightness depending on specimen type.
